EZG reviews Pathways #28

Pathways #28

116307

This installment of RiP’s FREE monthly e-zine is 36 pages long, 1 page front cover, 1 page ToC, 7 pages of advertisements, 1 page SRD, leaving us with 26 pages of content, so let’s take a look!

David Paul’s editorial gives some food for thought that has intrigued me to no small extent myself – the role guilds play in feudal society and the imho puzzling absence of them in many publications – as well as pointing you towards some appropriate supplements.

Steven D. Russell’s template of the issue is the Lostling template – at CR +2 the template represents creatures that got lost in the wilderness and have died of starvation or exposure to the elements, now carrying a disorienting aura, a control of the weather, wis-drain and an ability to suppress divinations and create spawns, perpetuating their cruel fate by drawing others into the deadly embrace of hostile nature. The sample creature is a phase spider that clocks in at CR 7.

Creighton Broadhurst provides us with an excerpt from the Village Backdrop of Thornhill (including its awesome b/w-map) and also gets us a CR 11 half-orc weapon master 12 character with full stats and background information.

The next 3 pages sum up some of the themes of the highly anticipated Questhaven city/campaign-supplement, explaining its central tenets and making for an intriguing preview – of course, if you’re like me, you’ve been stoked about the setting for quite some time now and reading this will probably rekindle that anticipatory fire.

This issue’s interview is with Jonathan G. Nelson – the mastermind of Adventureaweek.com (along his talented friends) – and believe me, the interview is actually quite nice to read, hinting at some of the glorious things to come from the crew that has improved from humble beginnings to one of the places I go to look for adventures that are different, that cover some unconventional ground and come with good/stellar artworks – if you haven’t, take a look at their Snow-White-modules. They are stellar! (Here’s the link for Part I, here’s the one for Part II)

The pdf closes with a best-of of 3pp-products reviewed by yours truly.

Conclusion:

Editing and formatting are top-notch, I didn’t notice any significant glitches. Layout adheres to RiP’s two-column full color standard and the pdf comes fully bookmarked for your convenience.

It’s hard to complain about free stuff and this issue of the e-zine provides some neat, cool content for FREE – and it is well-worth the non-existent price of admission and the space on your HD.The pdf also comes with a neat index of articles of Pathways-issues compiled by Jaren Rencher in .ods-format – neat to have!

All in all, a solid, FREE issue of the e-zine and well worth 5 stars!
