The Mourning Daughter (revised edition)

The Mourning Daughter (revised edition)

This supplement clocks in at 10 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial,1 page SRD, ½ a page blank, leaving us with 6.5 pages of content, so let’s take a look!

This review was requested by my patreons, to be undertaken at my convenience.

So, first of all: This supplement is intended for use with the Carrion Crown adventure path; secondly, this makes use of the cool, meaningful relationship rules introduced in Legendary Games’ Ultimate Relationships-pdf, picking up the support for the system with a sample character. The class employed for the Mourning Daughter’s build is, fittingly enough, Kobold Press’ White Necromancer, as featured in the New Paths Compendium-series.

The pdf does make a couple of adjustments to her background story to render her more interesting and multi-faceted. Now, if you do not have the white necromancer, fret not – the pdf does include the notes featuring all of her abilities, allowing you to use it sans much fuss. The mourning daughter comes with no less than 5 statblocks – level 2, level 4, level 6, level 8 and level 10. Formatting and rules-integrity of these is generally tight, if not perfect. Big kudos: The author has promptly fixed a couple of issues here!

The character does note her background as a studied woman, and this also influences her preferred gifts. Her affinities, as befitting her profession and status, is properly codified. Retaining her as a companion over the course of the AP. Starting a relationship with her will require proper commitment from the PCs, but the boons, one of which is gained at 7th and one at 10th rank, are substantial. The rules-language has been improved, though a lower caps skill reference is still here. The rank 10’s boon language, while still a bit wonky, is now fully functional. There is another boon for clerics, and one for non-casting characters – this one nets you 1 + Charisma modifier disrupt undead. Fun benefits and kudos for the swift improvement!

The detailed rank-up guidelines are well-crafted and offers for progression via quite a few different skills. Kudos for that!

Conclusion:

Editing and formatting have been improved in the revised edition – the pdf may not be perfect, but it has improved significantly. Kudos for fixing the guffaws. Layout adheres to a solid 2-column standard in full color, with a parchment-like background. The pdf has no bookmarks, but doesn’t necessarily need them at this length. The artwork of the daughter by Yann Thomas is fantastic for the low price point.

François Thomas’ freshman offering is a promising one – the idea to offer more, compelling relationships to enhance the roleplaying aspects of APs is a great one; the Mourning Daughter, as depicted here, is a fun character that is helpful and can add a distinct advantage for PCs for romancing her. The revised edition of this file has significantly improved rules-language and formatting – hence, my final verdict for the revised version will be increased to 4 stars. Kudos for fixing the file!
