20 Things: Bandits & Brigands (system neutral)

20 Things: Bandits & Brigands (system neutral)

This installment of Raging Swan Press’ system-neutral #20-series clocks in at 11 pages, 1 page front cover, 2 pages of advertisement, 1 page editorial, 1 page SRD, 1 page back cover, leaving us with 5 pages of content, so let’s take a look!

Okay, so the first part of this dressing file is pretty cool: We get no less than 8 entries of bandits, presented in a mostly system neutral manner. This means that the individuals sport brief notes on their alignment, gender, race and class. Each entry starts with a bolded summary that is easy to parse for the GM; thereafter, we have a read-aloud description in italics, and after that, we get a brief summary of the respective personality, an entry of mannerisms, and a proper hook for each of the brigands. All in all,a cool array of diverse, low-level scoundrels.

The second table deals with camp dressing, featuring 20 entries that include crude walls of tree branches and stumps, crude gravestones nearby, penned in livestock and shallow ditches – diverse, often interesting, and grounded – like it! 12 entries of loot for the camp, and 12 for looting bandit bodies, are up next. The camp might contain captives, beautifully-carved gargoyles, lamp oil by the gallons – pretty cool assortment here. Individual bandit bodies may feature monogrammed gloves, primitive tribal necklaces, bandits that collected daggers…pretty diverse and fun!

The final page of the pdf is devoted to 6 potential hooks and complications that the PCs may encounter – these can include attempted insurrection against the leader, the bandits being ravaged by disease…or perhaps the PCs are not the only bandit hunters?

Conclusion:

Editing and formatting are top-notch, I noticed no significant glitches. Layout adheres to Raging Swan Press’ elegant two-column b/w-standard and the pdf comes fully bookmarked for your convenience. Additionally, the pdf comes in two versions, one optimized for the printer and one for screen-use – kudos for going the extra mile there!

Creighton Broadhurst delivers a compelling, fun dressing file here. Diverse, with plenty of cool details and narrative angles, this is well worth 5 stars + seal of approval.
