Patreon Update 04/18

Dear patreons, dear readers,

this month was crazy busy for me! At the start of the month, I finished the Mini-Dungeons series (this month, you’ll see a rating-less breakdown of the compilation-book!) and after that, I dove straight into a huge amount of really big, work-intense books. Beyond managing to finally conclude my assessment of Spheres of Might, a lot of Kobold Press hardcover reviews were released. I also finally finished the review of the second Wanderlust Seasons-book.

That being said, the month has not gone by sans snags. Springtime has hit Germany without the usual rain, which translates to my allergies acting up, big time. I lost a couple of days this month to crippling migraines, where I barely managed to turn on the PC, post the reviews and crawl back into the solace of darkness as a result.

While I still managed to almost complete my reviews of the Manor magazines, as requested by a patreon at my leisure, I have yet to cover the final two ones. Similarly, the big review of card-based FAITH-rpg was slightly delayed by my health-struggles. Same goes for Ultimate Covenant Magic. Both are coming very soon! The Haunting of Hastur-series is also on my to-do list and pretty high on it!

That being said, I am pretty content with the books I have managed to cover thanks to the support of my patreons! There are a lot of big, books in this month’s list!

Without my patreons, none of these would be possible.

That being said, it’s also time to talk about something important:

After currency-conversion, patreon’s fee, etc., I am, after a brief stint last month, back to a level where reviewing is pretty much a 0-sum game, and we need to pass that at one point in the future to make this whole enterprise sustainable beyond just being a super time-consuming hobby that pays, barely, if at all, for the resources it consumes in time and electricity, paper, etc..

Without my dayjob and freelancing opportunities, I’d be operating at a loss here, and time/effort-wise, I most assuredly am. Without my passion, the amazing community of patreons and the fact that I’m treating this as a job…well, it wouldn’t exist…

I am currently in the process of assessing where I’d like to go from here, whether endzeitgeist.com can continue like this, or whether I need to look into other venues, cut down on reviewing altogether or focus on, for example, only reviews that patreons want to see. This would, however, mean a significant loss in diversity, and less “surprise”-books. These are long-term ideas I’m currently juggling, but I feel it’s necessary to be open about my situation. I’m not getting any younger, and I’ve been hard at work at this gig for a long while – so yeah, it’s not necessarily pleasant, but long-term evaluations like this are necessary.

That being said, I am also hopeful that all will improve, that the community will come together, and that I’ll be able to provide my service for years to come!

Right now, I’m waiting for the PF 2.0 Playtest. I will write the analysis of the system as promised, and after that, assess how much reviews I’ll be able to write in the future, perhaps for which systems, etc. If I should be forced to cut down on reviewing, I’ll definitely put that to the vote among my patreons, determining systems, books, etc.. It’s all in the future right now. We’ll see.

Anyways, to cut a long ramble short:

If you’re one of the many folks who visit my site on a daily basis, please contemplate supporting my patreon here.

It’s literally what keeps the lights on around here, and every buck, every small donation, helps.

Thank you.

Endzeitgeist out.
